Comcast recently explained (online and with representative) that the $19 a month internet fee comes with an unnecessary installation fee of $100. When I could do it for free. And have. I could use the self-installation kit... but only if I already had cable (?). Thoughts on if it's worth paying $140 for 2 months, only to cancel before moving into a new apartment...?
The boy I work with recently went on a diet where he eats no dairy or gluten. Lately I've been feeling sick every time I drink milk, eat cheese, or eat anything made with eggs. It has come to my attention that I may be allergic not only to soy, peas, lima beans, carrots, apples, and pears, but also to milk and eggs (internet says this is incredibly common). I have decided to eat no dairy, eggs, and limited gluten (just in case, will add back in if I start to feel better) for a little while in addition to my present dietary restrictions. Wish me luck!
Sick today, so I left work early and started studying at home. Made myself cream of mushroom soup (scratch) and felt better :)
You have four unexpected guests showing up for dinner in less than an hour, you haven't been to the store in days, and you want to impress them with a delicious meal. What do you serve them?
Being a person who keeps a fully-stocked pantry most of the time, I usually have a few staples on hand for days when I'm too busy to go shopping. I would make coconut curry rice and veg, possibly with chicken from the freezer. I have curry paste in the fridge, and I usually have coconut milk cans in my pantry. I make sticky rice (which I always have on hand), then add coconut milk. I would top with some sauteed veggies (whatever is handy... hopefully with some canned water chestnuts), cooked with some curry paste (I keep it in the fridge), olive oil, and a touch of Sirracha hot sauce.
Adam and I made this a few weeks ago and both agreed that it was pretty good. It's nice to have easy food options, and it's been kind of fun to find creative ways to make various asian dishes without a trace of soy or peanut.
Adam and I celebrated Valentine's on Friday because it was cheaper and he had work, but it was still really cool! We went to Lucca, a mediterranean restaurant in Sacramento which is apparently where the governor also eats regularly. We tried a seafood trio (tuna poke, raw salmon, and a raw scallop), escargot (which we both loved), and gnocchi with ricotta (just ok), with a phyllo and banana dessert. We then went to a hotel in Rancho Cordova for the night (it's fun to pretend we're on vacation). It was really fun :)
This movie was freakin awesome. Adam and I went with Whitney and Alex, her boyfriend, all the way to Sacramento to see My Bloody Valentine in 3D. It was freakin sweet. Great movie, and the 3D was really realistic. Perhaps a little nauseating after a few hours with the glasses on, but still really cool.
So recruitment officially ended today!!!! Hooray that it's finally over!!! We had 2 weeks of preparation; 1 week going over the procedures, the rules etc. as well as having fun with the girls (Raging Waters and Broom Ball as mandatory "bonding" activities, not that I'm complaining!) and 1 week of hard core overhaul on the house. The house looks gorgeous, new paint, new landscaping (read manual labor from all of us) and a newly-decorated interior. Rush was intense, we had 4 days of rounds with Potential New Members, which we call "pums". The last night of rush, preference night, is where the girls go to two houses, (we get two rounds of girls,) and chat with one member for the entirety of the event. We also do a ceremony and sing a few songs (we sing songs throughout, but these are more serious). The girls decide which house they want, and they all get bids to come back to receive pledge pins and go to bid day with the actives. (Pledging is a 6 week process of learning about the history/meaning of Theta and passing Alcohol EDU, as required by nationals. There is no testing or anything involved, we just like to make sure that the girls know a bit about the sorority they are joining.)
